Does anyone know what this phenomenon is called? This isn't something I did with the camera, I've seen this several times before. The sun was to the left of whatever this is.
Wow, Beckie. I have no clue. It almost looks like a prism (sp?) or part of a rainbow? What ever it is - it is beautiful...Or is He returning and that is the first sign?
It looks beautiful! and probably lasted very shortly, so your were there at the right moment to take this picture. Hope I can post my comment now, blogger isn't letting us -old bloggers - comment on beta blogs!!! happy ww!
I believe this is what you saw a part of. I did a quick search so I may not be totally correct.
Sun dogs. Parhelia. Sundogs are bright spots of white or orange, red and white found 22' from the sun. They will appear within a thin cirrostratus cloud covering containing ice crystals. They are part of the 22' halo that encompasses the sun, but it does not need to be present to form the dogs.
I just had an idea ! I post anonymous, but it's me Gattina. But unfortunately I am unable to tell you what it is. I think it's a light reflex from your camera perhaps ?

It's the mother ship. LOL! Great shot.
It's got to be a rainbow of sorts, just a very oddly shaped one!
How inspiring!

I'd call that God showing you some pretty lights in the sky. He is quite the painter....

Wow, what a gorgeous shot! If Antonette's correct, then what an odd name for something so beautiful... And since when do dogs fly? [grin]

I know that it is caused by ice crystals refracting sunlight in the clouds. Is that was is called an Ice Crystal Halo?
It appears to be a light refraction...
the glare of the sun catching the lens at a certain angle...
HAPPY WW
